My thoughts and prayers go out to those with friends and relatives in Haiti at this time. If you are looking for away to get support to that area, consider a donation to Lincoln/Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity designated to Haiti relief. Otherwise, I personally encourage you to donate directly through established organizations such as your church world relief or The American Red Cross.
Habitat has 2,000 homes built by Habitat in the country. There is an assessment team there right now, assessing what the situation is with these homes. Habitat's National Home Office is in Haiti. They are already in full swing erecting temporary modules that are designed to be added to later. They are projecting a 6-8 year recovery period. Habitat International is absorbing all the adminstrative cost so every designated dollar goes directly into the rebuilding effort.
Habitat's early response to the earthquake is threefold: 1. mobilizing people to clear the way for shelter construction and home rehabilitation; 2. distributing building materials and tools in shelter kits; 3. construction of transitional housing. In addition they are offering employment opportunities to those who have lost homes in the rebuilding process, thus they not only gain shelter, but a small income on which to live during this time of crisis.
